What is the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) ?

The SMR is a record of all known archaeological and historic sites in Herefordshire. This computerised record gives a summary description of each site and a list of the sources of information.

To search the SMR

Use the text boxes and drop-down menus in the search form to select sites matching specific criteria, such as Roman villas, or Medieval sites in Hereford. Then use the Start search button. A more detailed explanation of how to use the search form is available here.

Sources

In addition to searching the database of Sites and Monuments records it is possible to make an independent search of Sources. These include both bibliographic references in conventional journals and books, and unpublished ‘grey literature’, such as excavation and survey reports housed in the SMR offices in Hereford. Some of these sources will be made available from through this web site.
