Pont-hendre castle mound, Longtown.
SMR NO. 1038 GRID REF: SO 3256 2812
There is one irregular crescent shaped bailey protected by a scarp only, except for at junctions with the motte ditch where there are two lengths of rampart, 11ft above the bottom of the ditch. This is thought to be the site of an earlier castle than that at nearby Longtown, perhaps even the ‘Castelli de Ewias’ mentioned in the Pipe Rolls of 1187. |
