Moated Mound, Monks Court, Eardisland.

SMR NO. 1685 GRID REF: SO 4193 5880

On the N side of the River arrow and 300 yards to the NW of the castle mound and to the east of the River Arrow is another smaller mound.

Roughly circular, 28m across the base, rising 1.5m above the surrounding ground. It

appears to be the reduced remains of a motte with faint traces of a ditch on the N side, however, there is no evidence for a bailey.

The mound is flat topped with a depression in the top off-centre. The site is near he river and the old centre of the village.

The name "Monks Court" suggests former possession by a monastic house, perhaps Wigmore Abbey. It is also situated near to Nun House, which was formerly in the possession of Limebrook Priory.

The raised mound maybe an unusual form of a moated manor, designed to raise buildings above the flood plain of the river. It is unlikely that this site is that of a motte as there is another so close by.
