Eccleswall Castle, Linton.
SMR NO. 802 GRID REF: SO 6527 2330
Eccleswall Castle is SE of the Roman town of Ariconium and 4 miles east of Ross-on-Wye.
Description of the site today.
On this site nothing remains except a grass grown moat and a low mound of earth. Some fragments of masonry built into the nearby farm may have originally come from the castle.
The earthworks that exist have been much damaged by car tracks. The mound is flat topped with no scarp to the West Side. There are remains of a ditch on the South Side and to the East is a slight terrace and to the North a pond.
History.
In the Domesday Survey Linton is recorded as being held by King William. It consisted of 5 hides and paid the fourth part of one night's revenue. There were 10 villagers and 5 smallholders with 12 ploughs.
King John visited Eccleswall Castle in 1216, but it was allowed to fall into ruin when its owners acquired Goodrich castle in 1342.
Some of the stone from the castle appears to have been reused in the nearby Eccleswall Court, above the pigeon house entrance is an ornamental stone carved as a man’s head.
