Cothill Tump, Turnastone.
SMR NO. 1106 GRID REF: SO 3386 3630
600 yards to the west of Cothill Farm and 2.2km SSW of Peterchurch. Turnastone is thought to mean the 'estate of Tornai'. In the 1130's a Ralph de Tornai was associated with the area of Turnastone. (Herefordshire Place Names - Copleston-Crow, BAR British Series 214, 1989)
Description of the site today.
The mound is 34 yards in diameter rising approximately 12 ft above the bottom of the surrounding dry ditch.
On the top of the mound there is a sinking 3ft deep. There has been some damage done to the South and West of the mound by tree removal in 1967-8.
A field map seems to indicate a large circular bailey on the NE.
Opinion varies on this site from suggestions of a minor fortification to a Bronze Age burial mound.
